How laser and CNC cutting works

Laser cutting and CNC routing make a physical piece from a digital drawing. The machine cuts exactly along the lines in the file. This means we can cut detailed coastlines, small letters and shapes that fit together in wood, cork and acrylic. We can also cut the same shape exactly as many times as you need.

World maps in wood and cork

Our cut work includes world maps for offices and hotels. One layered wooden map in several wood tones runs along an office corridor wall. Each country is a separate piece, so the borders show as fine lines between them.

At Lanzerac in Stellenbosch, a laser-cut cork world map hangs on a black wall. The natural cork stands out on the dark paint. You can also push pins into a cork map, so it is useful as well as decorative.

If you want a map that covers the whole wall, we also print world map wallpaper and antique map murals. See custom wallpaper and wall murals.

Letters, logos and decorative pieces

We use the same process to cut letters and logos for signs. Most 3D letters and reception signs start as cut acrylic or wood letters. Each letter is a separate shape that stands out from the wall. Raised details, such as a logo mark, are fixed on top of a backing panel. We also cut decorative wall pieces, shapes for shop displays and one-off pieces for homes.

Artwork for cutting

A laser or router follows lines, so it needs a vector file. This can be AI, EPS, SVG, DXF or a PDF with vector paths. We cannot cut directly from a photo or a scan. If you have a sketch, a picture of a shape or a logo saved as a JPG, we can redraw it as a cutting file.

Very thin parts can break easily after cutting. We check your design and suggest changes before we cut. Our artwork guidelines explain file types in more detail.

FAQ

Laser & CNC cutting: questions

Have another question? Contact us or read the full FAQ.

01What is the difference between laser cutting and CNC routing?
A laser cuts with a focused beam of light. It suits fine detail, small lettering and thinner sheets of wood, cork and acrylic, and it leaves a slightly darker edge on wood. A CNC router cuts with a spinning bit. It suits thicker material and larger pieces. The right method depends on your design and the material.
02What file do you need for laser cutting?
We need a vector file, such as AI, EPS, SVG, DXF or a PDF with vector paths. The cutter follows the lines in the file. We cannot cut directly from a photo or a JPG of a logo, but we can redraw it as a cutting file. Our artwork guidelines explain the file types.
03Can you make a wooden world map for our office?
Yes. The layered map along an office corridor in our gallery is cut in several wood tones, with each country as a separate piece. Tell us the size of the wall and if you want mixed tones or a single finish. We will draw it up to fit.
04What is a cork world map used for?
It is for decoration, and you can also pin things to it. Natural cork stands out on a dark wall, as it does at Lanzerac. Guests or staff can pin photos, notes and travel memories into it. Cork maps suit hotels, offices, travel businesses and kids' rooms.
05Can you cut letters for a sign?
Yes. Most 3D signs start as cut acrylic or wood letters. This includes signs on reception walls and estate buildings. See our 3D letters and reception signs page for finishes and examples.
