We work for wine estates, hotels, dental practices, shops and homes. 02More information

Signs people can see in the day and at night

In the day, a lit sign is like any other sign. After dark, it is often the only thing people can see. At a wine estate, it helps guests find the cellar door. At a hotel, it helps arriving guests find the entrance. It also helps people find a practice or shop after hours.

At night, the Bergrivier Dental sign has a white halo of light on its wall. The Lanzerac Hotel and Spa sign shows the estate crest, the year 1692 and five stars in light.

Halo-lit signs, face-lit signs and light boxes

Halo-lit signs have lights behind the letters or logo. The light shines back onto the wall, so a soft glow outlines the shape. The front of the letters stays solid. This gives a soft, simple look. It suits the red La Motte crests on an oak wall, on the front of the tasting counter and at the end of the barrel cellar.

Face-lit letters light up through their fronts, so they are brighter and easier to read from far away. Light boxes have lights inside, behind a printed face. The whole panel lights up, which works well for shopfronts and menus.

Logos with bold shapes and solid areas light best. Very fine lines and tiny text are hard to light evenly. We may suggest lighting only the main shape and leaving the small details unlit. We set up large crests at full size before production. Our photo of the Lanzerac crest artwork on the floor shows how large these crests are.

Power and position

Every lit sign needs power where it is mounted. A qualified electrician should connect it to the mains. Send us photos of the wall and the nearest power point. Also send a photo from the place where people will first see the sign. Tell us if the sign is indoors or outdoors. We will confirm the lighting, fixing and fitting when we quote. For signs made of coloured lines of light, see neon and LED signs.

FAQ

Illuminated signs: questions

Have another question? Contact us or read the full FAQ.

01What does halo-lit mean?
A halo-lit sign has lights behind the letters or logo. The light shines back onto the wall, so a soft glow outlines the shape. The front of the letters stays solid. This is why the red La Motte crests are easy to read in the day and glow after dark. Halo lighting suits stone, timber and painted walls where you want a soft, simple look and not a bright panel.
02What is the difference between a light box and lit letters?
A light box is a box with a printed face that lets light through. Lights inside the box light up the whole panel. Lit letters are separate letters or a logo, lit through the front or from behind, and you see the wall between them. Light boxes suit busy shopfronts and menus. Lit letters look cleaner and more like part of the building.
03Can my existing logo be made into a lit sign?
Usually, yes. Bold shapes and solid areas light best. Very fine lines and small text are hard to light evenly. If your logo has a lot of detail, we may suggest lighting only the main shape and leaving the small text unlit. Send your logo and we will advise you.
04Does an illuminated sign need an electrician?
Yes, for the mains connection. The sign needs a power supply where it is mounted, and a qualified electrician should connect it to the mains. Send photos of the wall and the nearest power point. We will confirm what your sign needs when we quote.
05Can you make a lit sign for my house?
Yes. One of our signs is the lit 4 on Swallow house name on a boundary wall. It is easy to read at dusk. A lit name or number helps visitors, delivery drivers and emergency services find you after dark.
06How much does an illuminated sign cost?
It depends on the size, the type of lighting, the materials and the fitting. We quote every lit sign separately. Send a photo of where it will go, your logo and a rough size. We will confirm the options and the price when we quote.
