How we fit a mural to your wall

We make each printed mural for one wall. We take your measurements and scale the image to fit. Then we agree with you where the important parts of the picture will go. For example, we make sure a mountain is not hidden behind the headboard and a face is not split by a door frame.

Next, we cut the design into drops. Drops are the vertical strips of wallpaper that hang side by side. Each drop overlaps or butts up to the next one, so the picture continues without a break.

Some of the panoramic murals in the photos above cover a whole room or corridor. One shows Table Mountain across the bay. Another shows a beach at sunset along a corridor. We use the same method for a single feature wall behind a bed or a reception desk.

Patterned and textured wallpaper

You do not have to use a photograph. We print damask, botanical, brick, weathered wood and kids’ patterns in the same way, and the pattern repeats across the wall. At Lanzerac, a damask pattern goes up the curved stairwell and over the restaurant seating. We printed it to fit those walls. In one bedroom, we printed whitewashed wood planks onto a bare white wall.

Choosing an image for a mural

A large print shows every detail in an image, including any faults. This is why the original file is important. A photo from a good camera or a recent phone usually prints well at wall size. Images saved from websites or social media are compressed and too small.

If you are not sure, send us what you have. We will check it and suggest other options if needed. These include licensed stock images that are made for large prints. Our artwork guidelines explain resolution and file types in more detail.

How to prepare the wall

Wallpaper needs a smooth, solid and clean wall. Any cracks need to be filled and sanded. New paint needs time to cure before we hang paper over it. Texture and damp show through wallpaper. We look at photos of your wall before we quote, and we tell you what it needs.

FAQ

Wallpaper & wall murals: questions

Have another question? Contact us or read the full FAQ.

01How do I measure my wall for a mural?
Measure the full width and full height of the wall at the widest and tallest points. Use millimetres if you can, and note any windows, doors or plug points. Send us these numbers and a photo of the wall taken straight on. We add a little extra for trimming so the edges finish neatly.
02Can you print my own photograph as wallpaper?
Yes. Send the original file from your camera or phone. Screenshots and images saved from social media are too small. We check if your photo has enough detail for the size of your wall. If it will look soft or blurry, we tell you before we print anything.
03Do you hang the wallpaper as well?
Yes, we can hang it for you. The wall must be smooth, clean and dry. Fresh paint needs time to cure (harden fully) before we hang paper on it. We will tell you how to prepare your wall when we quote.
04Can I have wallpaper in a bathroom?
Yes, if the room has good ventilation and the paper is away from direct splashes. We have papered several bathrooms and guest toilets. For a shower wall or any wall that gets wet, ask us about other options.
05Is there removable wallpaper for a rented flat?
Yes. You can take self-adhesive wall vinyl down later, so it suits rented flats and short-term use. Tell us it must be removable when you ask for a quote.
