World maps: made in wood, cork and wallpaper
A layered wooden world map along an office corridor, a laser-cut cork map on a black wall at Lanzerac and a blue world map wallpaper behind a lounge suite.
A layered wooden map
Along an office corridor, we made a world map from laser-cut wooden pieces. The wood comes in several shades, from pale to dark brown, so countries next to each other are easy to tell apart. The country names are marked on the wood. The whole map is fixed to a clear panel. Metal stand-offs hold the panel a little away from the wall. The map then casts soft shadows on the white wall behind it.
A cork map at Lanzerac
At Lanzerac in Stellenbosch, we laser-cut the continents from cork and mounted them on a black wall. Cork is a natural material with a warm colour. The pale shapes stand out clearly against the black wall. You can also push pins into cork, so you can use a map like this to mark places you have visited.
A world map wallpaper
We can also print a world map as a wall mural. Behind a lounge suite and desk, a blue political map covers the whole wall. In a study or office corner, a map like this is useful as well as decorative. An antique map mural from one of our home murals jobs shows the same idea in an older style.
