Swim Duck Swim: studio signage in the Bo-Kaap

Swim Duck Swim is a brand development studio in the Bo-Kaap. Its building has a white wall and tall barred windows. The studio’s name is on the upper wall between the windows, in black letters, with the three words stacked one above the other. At night the lettering is lit. The letters glow against the wall, so people can still see the name from the street.

Below it, the words “Brand Development Studio” are in white on three stepped black panels. The panels stick out from the wall. The stepped shape matches the stacked name above. Because the sign sticks out from the building, people on the pavement can see it from the side. People across the road can see it too.

Why the design is simple

A design studio’s own sign is an example of its work. By day the sign is black on white, and at night it is lit. It uses only the name and a clear layout. This suits a Bo-Kaap building better than a large light box would.
