Frosted window film: privacy, light and branding on glass

Updated 19 October 2026

Summary

Frosted window film is a translucent self-adhesive vinyl that goes on glass. It blurs the view through the glass but still lets daylight in, and it looks like sandblasted glass. Cape Town offices, clinics, shops and homes use it for privacy on partitions, boardrooms and bathroom windows. They also use it for manifestation bands that make glass doors easy to see, and for logos cut into the frost. This guide from Prodigy Graphics compares frosted, printed and one-way vision film.

How frosted film works

Frosted film is also called sandblast or etched-look vinyl. It is a translucent self-adhesive film that scatters light as it passes through. Daylight still comes in, but shapes and colours behind the glass are blurred. You get privacy and the room stays light. It looks like sandblasted glass, but you can remove it later. This suits rented offices and shopfronts.

How much people can see depends on distance. An object pressed against frosted glass shows as a soft shape. People a few steps back from the glass are only a blur. For this reason, boardrooms and offices usually frost a band across the glass, from about desk height to just above head height. The clear glass at the top and bottom lets in light and stops the room from feeling closed in. For bathrooms, consulting rooms and changing areas, frost the full pane.

Frosted, printed and one-way vision film

There are three main kinds of window film. Each one does a different job.

Frosted (sandblast) vinyl is plain frost. It can cover the full pane, form a band, or be cut into stripes, patterns and logos. The cover photo shows a band of frosted hexagons across office glass. This pattern also works as manifestation (see below).

Printed window film has an image printed onto clear or frosted film. Examples in our window film projects include a grass silhouette on glass folding doors and a printed frost on a large boardroom window. We also printed Rembrandt’s portrait and Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring across the panes of two wooden glass doors.

One-way vision is vinyl with many tiny holes in it, printed on the side that faces out. From outside, you see the image. From inside, you look out through the holes. By day, the bright printed side is easy to see and the darker room behind it is hard to see. This hides the inside of the room. At night, with the lights on inside, the effect reverses and people can see in. It is mostly used on shop windows and vehicle windows.

Manifestation on glass doors and partitions

Manifestation means markings on large areas of clear glass. The markings help people see the glass, so they do not walk into it. Clean glass doors, full-height partitions and glass panels beside doors are easy to miss. This is most likely in busy offices, shops and clinics, and when the light behind the glass changes during the day.

Follow these points for manifestation:

  1. Put the markings across the glass at about the eye level of a standing adult.
  2. Consider a second, lower band for children and people in wheelchairs.
  3. Make sure the markings contrast with whatever is behind the glass, in daylight and under electric light.
  4. Run the markings across the full width of the glass, so people see them from every direction.
  5. You can use your brand. Dots, hexagons, a repeated logo or a frosted band with lettering all work, as long as they are easy to see.

Ask your landlord or building manager if the building has its own rules for marking glass.

Cut logos on glass

Glass is a good place for a logo. We can cut a logo out of the frost, so it shows as clear glass in a frosted panel. We can also cut the logo from frost and apply it on clear glass. The frosted lettering on the glass of a reception office at Lanzerac is made this way. On shop doors, most businesses use coloured cut vinyl for opening hours, phone numbers and social media handles. A frosted logo on the glass of a meeting room is more subtle.

Frost is easiest to see against a dark background. With a dim room behind it, a frosted logo looks bright. Against bright daylight, it is harder to see. Cut work needs a vector logo. Read our artwork guidelines before you send files.

How to clean window film

Window film is easy to care for if you treat it gently:

  1. Do not touch or clean new film for the first few days after fitting, so the adhesive can settle.
  2. Clean with a soft cloth or sponge and mild soapy water, or a glass cleaner that does not scratch.
  3. Wipe from the middle of the film out towards the edges. Never wipe into an edge, because this can lift the film.
  4. Never use blades, scrapers, scouring pads or harsh solvents on the film.
  5. Dry with a soft cloth or a rubber squeegee.
  6. Tell your window cleaners the film is there.

FAQ

Common questions

Have another question? Contact us or read the full FAQ.

01Can people see through frosted window film at night?
No, not in detail. Frosted film blurs the view in both directions, by day and at night. When the room is lit and it is dark outside, people or objects close to the glass can show as soft outlines. For bathrooms and treatment rooms, frost the full pane instead of a band.
02Does frosted film make a room darker?
Only a little. Frosted film lets daylight through but spreads it, so the room stays bright while people cannot see straight in. A frosted band at eye level, with clear glass above and below, lets in even more light. Printed and one-way vision films block more light. How much depends on how much of the glass the print covers.
03Which side of the glass does window film go on?
Usually the inside. Frosted film and most lettering go on the inside face of the glass, where weather and dirt cannot reach them. We can apply shop lettering in reverse on the inside, so it reads correctly from the street. One-way vision film goes on the outside, because the printed side must face the viewer. We will advise on your glass when we quote.
04Can you cut my logo into frosted film?
Yes. We can cut a logo out of the frost so it shows as clear glass. We can also cut the logo from frost and apply it on clear glass. We need the logo as a vector file, such as AI, EPS, SVG or a vector PDF. If you only have a JPG, we can redraw it.
